World Triathlon

2022 World Para Triathlon Series lands in Montreal on Friday 8th July, after a brilliant season starter in Yokohama in May. The fields are stacked with world champions, Paralympic gold medallists and Paralympic hopefuls aiming for Paris 2024. Parc Jean Drapeau, where the Formula 1 circuit is located, will set the scene for the para triathlon medal events, six male and six female, scheduled for the second stage of the World Para Series in 2022.

The spectacular venue at the Parc will see the athletes take to the Bassin Olympique for the 750m swim before transitioning out and onto five laps of the Gilles-Villeneuve race track, home of the F1 Grand Prix. The race concludes with two laps of the lake, providing triathletes with an iconic setting to finish the race.

The Montreal Para Series will be the second stop of the series this year, after Yokohama and before Swansea in August, with the para triathletes then ready for the World Championships that will take place in Abu Dhabi in November.

In contention for gold in the men’s PTS5 category will be Paralympic medallist and world champion Stefan Daniel (CAN) and Paralympian Chris Hammer USA. Daniel will be vying for glory in front of a home crowd while Hammer will be setting up for a repeat performance of his gold in the 2021 World Triathlon Para Championships Abu Dhabi. There will be an intense battle for medals between Brazil compatriots Ronan Cordeiro and Carlos Rafael Viana, Australia’s David Bryant and Portugal’s Filipe Marques.

In the women’s PTS5 category Paralympic champion Grace Norman will be the one to beat however Canada’s Kamylle Frenette, who earned fourth place in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, will be after a gold medal performance at home.

USA’s Kyle Coon claimed gold at the season opener in Yokohama and will be hard to beat in the men’s PTVI category. Fellow team member Owen Cravens, Spain’s Jose Luis Garcia Serrano and Australia’s Jonathan Goerlach will challenge Coon to a battle for the medals. Goerlach will be determined to improve on his 6th place in Yokohama and step onto the World Para Series Podium in Montreal. Great Britain’s Oscar Kelly, who showed outstanding form in the 2021 World Triathlon Para Championships Abu Dhabi, is a favourite for the medals.

Paralympic champion Susana Rodriguez (ESP) will want to continue her winning form and earn WTPS gold in the PTVI women’s race in Montreal. Rodriguez’s will plan to establish an early lead from Italy’s Francesca Tarantello to seize the title.

Paralympic silver medallist Hailey Danz of the USA is a firm favourite for the victory in the women’s PTS2 race while fellow USA team member Kelly Elminger is down as the main contender for the gold in the PTS4 women’s race, after taking the tape in the 2021 World Triathlon Para Championships Abu Dhabi.

The men’s PTS4 category is stacked with talent with the likes of Australia’s Liam Twomey and Jeremy Peacock, Great Britain’s Finley Jakes and USAs’ Eric McElhenny.

Spain’s Lionel Morales claimed victory in the World Para Triathlon Yokohama and will be aiming to remain upfront of the PTS2 men’s field with USAs Mohamed Lahna, who is chasing one better than his WTPS silver in Yokohama.

Kini Carrasco of Spain will re-acquaint his rivalry with four-time Series winner Nico Van Der Burgt (NED) joining the fray with Australia’s Justin Godfrey in contention for the PTS3 men’s podium.

Montreal will see a star-studded and world class field in the PTWC races including dual Paralympic champion and five-time world champion Jetze Platz from the Netherlands making his 2022 Series debut in the Parc alongside teammate Geert Schipper. In Yokohama Australia’s Nic Beveridge found another gear to punch the Series tape and is arriving in Canada in superb form, after the impressive season-opening performance. In the women’s field, USA’s Paralympic gold medallist Kendall Gretsch will renew the rivalry with Australia’s Lauren Parker, who will be commencing her 2022 World Para Triathlon Series season in Montreal.
