World Triathlon

Next month the city of Pontevedra in Galicia, Spain will roll out the welcome mat for some of the best triathletes in Europe and the world.  The Pontevedra ITU Triathlon Premium European Cup slated for April 19 kicks off the 2008 European circuit.  The event is not only the European season opener, it will be the first its kind to ever be staged in the beautiful city tucked away in Spain’s northwest corner. 

The Premium European Cup is expected to draw huge crowds and a stellar field that will sure to include Pontevedra’s favorite son, Javier Gomez.  The overall world cup champion for the last two years is widely regarded as the man to beat in Beijing this summer and won’t miss the opportunity to race in his hometown.  The finish area of the race will be in the stadium of the performance center where Gomez trains.

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the event has recently unveiled its logo and launched its website.  Available online are course maps, schedule, accommodation information, registration details and local tourist information.  The athletes’ handbook will be uploaded and available shortly.  Through the website of the Spanish Triathlon Federation, the Pontevedra event website will provide live timing, text and photos on race day, giving it the feel of a world cup.

The race has received tremendous support from the City of Pontevedra, Xunta de Galicia, the Federación Gallega de Triatlón and the Spanish Triathlon Federation.  All have worked together to bring a world class event to the city.  It will also serve as an important tune-up for many triathletes as they prepare for the prestigious ETU Triathlon European Championships in Lisbon, Portugal.  The Pontevedra ITU Triathlon Premium European Cup features a total prize purse of €25,000.

El próximo mes la ciudad gallega de Pontevedra en, España dará la bienvenida a algunos de los mejores triatletas de Europa y el Mundo. La Copa de Europa Premium programada para el 19 de Abril da inicio al circuito Europeo del 2008. La prueba no es sólo el comienzo de la temporada europea, sino también la primera vez en la historia que se organiza una prueba de esta categoría en el noroeste de España.

Se espera que la Copa de Europa Premium atraiga a un gran número de aficionados y de estrellas entre los que seguramente esté el hijo favorito de Pontevedra, Javier Gómez. El campeón de la general de la copa del mundo los últimos dos años es el favorito para Beijing este verano y no dejará escapar la oportunidad de correr en su ciudad natal. La parte final de la carrera será en la pista del centro de alto rendimiento donde entrena Javier Gómez.

El Comité Organizador Local de la prueba ha anunciado recientemente el logo y la página Web de la prueba. En la página están disponibles los mapas del recorrido, programación, información sobre alojamiento, detalles de inscripción e información sobre el turismo local. La guía del atleta estará colgada y disponible en breve. A través de la página Web de la Federación Española de Triatlón y la página Web de la prueba de Pontevedra se facilitarán los tiempos en directo, noticias y fotos del día de la carrera, como si se tratase de una copa del mundo.

La carrera ha recibido un apoyo tremendo de la Ciudad de Pontevedra, Junta de Galicia, Federación Gallega de Triatlón y Federación Española de Triatlón. Todos han trabajado juntos para traer una prueba de clase mundial a la ciudad. También servirá como una importante puesta a punto para muchos triatletas en la preparación del prestigioso Campeonato de Europa de Triatlón ETU en Lisboa, Portugal. La Copa de Europa Premium de Triatlón ITU de Pontevedra tiene una bolsa de premios de 25,000€.
