The future is bright as Anderson and Holmes earn gold in the Commonwealth Youth Games
The 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games is currently being staged in the Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. Triathlon took centre stage for the youth races on Sunday, 6th August. Athletes were welcomed with warm conditions for the super-sprint race format on Buccoo Beach. The individual youth races were staged on Sunday, 6th August and youth teams got to experience representing their country and participate in the thrilling Mixed Relay format on Tuesday, 8th August.
Australia’s Aspen Anderson and Jersey’s Luke Holmes have claimed gold in the individual super-sprint triathlon, pushing through to claim top of the podium finishes.
YOUTH WOMEN’S RACE
Scotland’s Jessica Heeps and Jersey’s Siena Stephens led the women’s field through the swim and onto the bike. The same athletes were joined by Siena Stephens of Jersey, South Africa’s Kadence Ribbink and Australia’s Aspen Anderson.
Anderson led the women’s race out of the second transition of the day followed by Siena Stephens of Jersey and Scotland’s Heeps. Anderson remained out in front with Heeps chasing in second. Namibia’s Maja Jeanne Brinkmann passed Stephens and moved into third position on the run and continued the hunt for medals.
Anderson took to the picturesque course for the 375m swim, 10km bike and 2.5km run to finish and take the tape, earning gold for Australia with an overall time of 32:53, 24-seconds ahead of silver medallist Jessica Heeps of Scotland. Brinkmann, who showed her class on the run, was awarded bronze.
“It was such a great race, it was so fun, and I’ve never raced anything like that before. It was in a great place too; the whole atmosphere was amazing and to be part of Team Australia is like nothing else. I really enjoyed it all. We came from the Australian winter to this weather today and it was a bit of a shock to the system, but I think I pulled it off today,” Anderson said.
YOUTH MEN’S RACE
Scotland’s Alex Robin led the youth men’s triathlon race out of the 375m swim in Buccoo Beach and into transition with an impressive 10-seconds lead on Jersey’s Luke Holmes, Australia’s Jack Latham and India’s Yajat Aiyappa KP. Holmes, Robin, Australia’s Oscar Wootton established a 10-second lead on the 10km bike course. The chase group featured Malta’s Kat Azzopardi, Nathan Max Centlivres Chase of Namibia and South Africa’s Alessandro Fanicchi.
Jersey’s Holmes and Scotland’s Robin took control on the run, leaving Australia’s Latham chasing for bronze. Holmes had the run speed to open up a gap on the 2.5 run. Robin continued his hunt for a Youth Commonwealth Games medal. Button and Azzopardi had their own race going on behind. Lathan showcased incredible run form who was able to pass Azzopardi and move into third.
Holmes dominated the run to take the tape and secure gold for Jersey in the Youth Commonwealth Games. Robins, who led the men’s race in the swim and the bike was able to maintain his second position on the run to be awarded with the silver medal. Australia’s Latham powered through the run leg of the race to spectacularly claim the bronze medal.
YOUTH MIXED RELAY
Attention turned to the Mixed Relay on Tuesday 8th August. Team Australia took gold in the Youth Mixed Relay, part of the Youth Commonwealth Games triathlon competition.
Team Scotland claimed silver in the Youth Mixed Relay and Team Jersey claimed an impressive bronze.
